During the summer months, we finally planned a brief road trip to visit a restaurant made famous for its flying dinner rolls. Lambert’s Cafe is located in Foley, Alabama, a road trip that is less than two hours from our home in Gulfport.
Although there is a major wait to get inside, the operators have managed to have it down to a science. We placed ourselves on a waiting list, provided our cellphone number and made a pitstop to a nearby outlet mall until they texted us that our spot was nearly ready.
The environment was very welcoming and although it is disconcerting to have dinner rolls being regularly tossed over your head, the staffers were pleasant, light-hearted and made it a fun affair for the kids. My daughter absolutely loved it – although her tossed rolls ended up skidding on the floor.
The food is full-on southern-style cooking with lots of vegetables like fried okra, which they serve as an appetizer on paper napkins while you wait on your entrees like steaks, ribs, pot pies and more. They also had plenty of sides (they called them Pass arounds) they kept coming like beans, macaroni/tomatoes and cabbage greens. The food was served piping hot and you will NOT leave the least bit hungry. It was definitely worth the visit and we will be returning whenever we are in the area. The rolls are served with apple butter.
